“A spoon of this before sleeping”, “A glass of that after waking up”, “Two pieces of these before dusk”, “Boil them for 5 minutes and drink it straight up before lunch”! The list just doesn’t seem to end, does it? Well that’s what happens when one’s curious, anxious and all ears during pregnancy especially when everyone around seems to have their own version of best practices to follow during pregnancy’ and they’re all in to help you sail through yours.
Traditional Indian remedies are full of tried and tested formulas that are designed to help you cope up with everything pregnancy throws at you. While some are controversial, many other dietary practices from back in the day are applicable even today. There are dead giveaways like avoiding anything that’s packaged / full of preservatives. But then again, never underestimate the power of self-awareness through research done to curb one’s own curiosity, e.g. drinking plenty of milk during pregnancy is a misconception that’s still followed by a lot of women.
Another misconception is the fact that all mothers-to-be go through unexplainable cravings during pregnancy – not entirely true. Cravings rise out of unbalanced diet habits and it’s seen among a lot of women today because of the same reason. Women who’ve maintained a balanced diet rarely fall prey to cravings. For the first time in her life, the mother-to-be needs to understand the concept of macro-nutrients (i.e. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats)
Although all of this sounds serious and technical, it’s actually quite easy. In fact, if one makes the most out of search engines, it barely seems like a task to put together a balanced diet. It is also one of the main reasons to check your vitals and understand the optimum intake of nutrients and calories to maintain weight and to make sure you’re eating for two. It takes all of two minutes to figure out whether eating something is viable or not, something as simple as Googling for it. Just keep in mind that the minimal calorie intake for Indian females is clocked at 1500 to 1700 calories a day.
If you’re at your workplace, keeping yourself away from cravings is as difficult as it gets. One simple solution, stash what you’re allowed to eat: like a small portion of dried fruits, nuts, healthy biscuits etc. for that extra boost of energy.
And yes, if you decide to give yourself a treat once in a while, go ahead. Always remember, hormones and mood go hand in hand. Keeping one of them at optimum levels ensures the other is in place, simple logic, isn’t it? The moment you feel like you’re craving for something, in particular, help yourself to it and forget about it before guilt decides to take over. Ensure you eat healthy for the next few days. Don’t make food your enemy – the only mantra you need to follow during this period.
